Student Pilot Certificate Your first official document. Obtained via MedXpress/IACRA. Required before solo flight. No minimum hours — just a medical exam and instructor endorsement.
Private Pilot License (PPL) — 14 CFR Part 61.103 Minimum requirements: - 40 hours total time (Part 61) or 35 hours (Part 141) - 20 hours with an instructor - 10 hours solo (including 5 hours cross-country) - 3 hours night flying with 10 night takeoffs/landings - 3 hours instrument training - One 150nm+ cross-country with landings at 3 points
Reality: national average is 65-75 hours. Cost: $14,000-$23,000. FRS target: 55-65 at completion.
Instrument Rating (IR) — 14 CFR Part 61.65 Minimum requirements: - 50 hours cross-country PIC time - 40 hours actual or simulated instrument time - 15 hours with a CFII - Cross-country IFR flight of 250nm+ with 3 different approaches
Cost: $13,000-$19,000. FRS target: 70-78 at completion (spatial precision subscore critical).
Commercial Pilot License (CPL) — 14 CFR Part 61.129 Minimum requirements: - 250 total hours (Part 61) or 190 hours (Part 141) - 100 hours PIC - 50 hours cross-country PIC - 10 hours instrument training - 10 hours complex or TAA aircraft - Commercial maneuvers proficiency
Cost from IR: $20,000-$35,000. FRS target: 78-85 at completion.
Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) — 14 CFR Part 61.159 Minimum requirements: - 1,500 hours total (or 1,000/1,250 R-ATP) - 500 hours cross-country - 100 hours night - 75 hours instrument - 250 hours PIC
The ATP is your key to the airline cockpit. With it, you can serve as pilot in command for Part 121 operations. FRS target: 85+ (airline-competitive threshold).
Additional Ratings & Endorsements
Multi-Engine Rating - No minimum hours required - Typically 10-15 hours of training - Cost: $3,000-$6,000 - Essential for airline career path
Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) - Must hold CPL + IR - FOI (Fundamentals of Instruction) written exam - CFI practical test (one of the hardest checkrides) - This is your #1 time-building strategy
CFII (Instrument Instructor) - Add-on to CFI - Allows you to teach instrument students - Higher demand = more work = faster time building
MEI (Multi-Engine Instructor) - Premium instructor certification - Highest-paid instructing work - Excellent preparation for airline training
Type Ratings - Required for aircraft >12,500 lbs or turbojet - B737, A320, etc. — these come with airline employment - Cost if self-funded: $10,000-$25,000
