Every certificate, every rating, every requirement — mapped out clearly with the hours, costs, and competency targets for each stage of your pilot journey.

The FAA Certification Ladder

Student Pilot Certificate Your first official document. Obtained via MedXpress/IACRA. Required before solo flight. No minimum hours — just a medical exam and instructor endorsement.

Private Pilot License (PPL) — 14 CFR Part 61.103 Minimum requirements: - 40 hours total time (Part 61) or 35 hours (Part 141) - 20 hours with an instructor - 10 hours solo (including 5 hours cross-country) - 3 hours night flying with 10 night takeoffs/landings - 3 hours instrument training - One 150nm+ cross-country with landings at 3 points

Reality: national average is 65-75 hours. Cost: $14,000-$23,000. FRS target: 55-65 at completion.

Instrument Rating (IR) — 14 CFR Part 61.65 Minimum requirements: - 50 hours cross-country PIC time - 40 hours actual or simulated instrument time - 15 hours with a CFII - Cross-country IFR flight of 250nm+ with 3 different approaches

Cost: $13,000-$19,000. FRS target: 70-78 at completion (spatial precision subscore critical).

Commercial Pilot License (CPL) — 14 CFR Part 61.129 Minimum requirements: - 250 total hours (Part 61) or 190 hours (Part 141) - 100 hours PIC - 50 hours cross-country PIC - 10 hours instrument training - 10 hours complex or TAA aircraft - Commercial maneuvers proficiency

Cost from IR: $20,000-$35,000. FRS target: 78-85 at completion.

Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) — 14 CFR Part 61.159 Minimum requirements: - 1,500 hours total (or 1,000/1,250 R-ATP) - 500 hours cross-country - 100 hours night - 75 hours instrument - 250 hours PIC

The ATP is your key to the airline cockpit. With it, you can serve as pilot in command for Part 121 operations. FRS target: 85+ (airline-competitive threshold).

Additional Ratings & Endorsements

CFII (Instrument Instructor) - Add-on to CFI - Allows you to teach instrument students - Higher demand = more work = faster time building

MEI (Multi-Engine Instructor) - Premium instructor certification - Highest-paid instructing work - Excellent preparation for airline training

Type Ratings - Required for aircraft >12,500 lbs or turbojet - B737, A320, etc. — these come with airline employment - Cost if self-funded: $10,000-$25,000
