The Problem: Aviation's Subjectivity Crisis
Aviation training and assessment have a fundamental problem: they're almost entirely subjective.
When a designated pilot examiner (DPE) evaluates a checkride, they're using the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) — a document that specifies tolerances like "maintain altitude ±100 feet" and "maintain heading ±10°." But the DPE's actual pass/fail decision incorporates dozens of unwritten factors: body language, confidence, communication style, and their own personal standards.
The result? Checkride pass rates vary by 30+ percentage points depending on which DPE you get. A pilot who passes with one examiner might fail with another. This isn't a quality problem — it's a measurement problem.
Behavioral telemetry solves this by replacing subjective observation with objective data.
The Technology Stack
Data Capture Layer We capture 200+ discrete data points per second from the flight simulation environment via the SimConnect API:
- Position: latitude, longitude, altitude (MSL/AGL), heading, pitch, bank - Performance: indicated airspeed, true airspeed, vertical speed, ground speed - Engine: throttle position, RPM, manifold pressure, fuel flow - Controls: aileron, elevator, rudder input deflections - Navigation: glideslope deviation, localizer deviation, distance to runway - State: on ground, gear position, flap setting, autopilot status
Processing Layer Raw telemetry flows through Databricks for real-time processing. We compute: - Rolling compliance scores (5-second windows) - Deviation analytics (from standard profiles) - Cognitive load indicators (input frequency, correction amplitude) - Comparative benchmarks (vs. population at same experience level)
Scoring Layer The Flight Readiness Score (FRS) is computed as a weighted average: - Procedural Compliance (30%): Checklist execution, V-speed adherence, callout timing - Spatial Precision (40%): Flight path accuracy, approach tracking, landing precision - Cognitive Load (30%): Reaction times, multi-tasking efficiency, error recovery speed
Scores range from 0-100. An FRS of 82+ correlates with a 94% checkride pass rate.
The Data Moat
What makes this valuable isn't the technology — it's the dataset. With 2,400+ active pilots generating telemetry daily, we've built the largest behavioral flight data repository in the world. This creates three unassailable advantages:
1. Normative Benchmarks We know exactly what "good" looks like at every experience level. A student with 50 sim hours should track the glideslope within X deviation. A 200-hour pilot should react to V₁ cut within Y seconds. These benchmarks don't exist anywhere else.
2. Predictive Models With thousands of pilots' complete training arcs — from first flight to airline-ready — we can predict future performance from current data. We know which skill gaps at 100 hours predict failure at 500 hours. This allows early intervention.
3. Network Effects Every new pilot on the platform improves the models for everyone. More data → better benchmarks → more accurate predictions → more pilots join → more data. This is a classic data network effect that compounds over time.
Applications Across the Industry
For Airlines Pre-screen candidates using FRS before investing in type rating. Filter by specific competencies (spatial precision for narrow-body ops, cognitive resilience for international long-haul). Predict which candidates will succeed in training with 94% accuracy.
For Flight Academies Identify struggling students at 20 hours instead of 100. Customize training plans based on individual weak areas. Prove training outcomes with data (a powerful marketing tool). Reduce washout rates by 30-40%.
For Insurance/Underwriting Risk-assess pilots with objective behavioral data. Price policies based on demonstrated competency, not just logged hours. Identify high-risk behavioral patterns before they cause incidents.
For Regulators Support competency-based pilot assessment alongside hour-based requirements. Provide population-level safety insights. Enable data-driven policy decisions about training credit for simulation.
For Private Equity De-risk aviation workforce investments with pipeline visibility. Quantify the talent supply chain for portfolio companies. Identify acquisition targets in the flight training space based on data quality.
